Physical Security - Week 9

Physical Security

Physical security is equally as important as network security, or strong passwords. This week we will talk about some of the physical threats organisations face and some measures of how companies can try and minimise the risk of an attack.

Common threats for organisations are: theft, vandalism, social engineering, insider threat actors, and in some cases natural disasters, such as floods, fires or power outages. It is important to consider all of these risks and take measures to minimise the risk of any threat that could compromise your network.

Some common threats for organisations are:

Unauthorised Access - Threat actor gaining access to the building with malicious intent.

Theft - Threat actor stealing computers or devices.

Vandalism -  Threat actor causing deliberate damage to systems, disrupting services.

Insider Threat - An employee with malicious intent, stealing damaging or breaching systems or data.

Social Engineering - Someone manipulating employees to gain unauthorised access to server room or gather information.

Some security measures we could take:

  • Keep valuables locked in a secure room.
  • Implementing doors that require biometrics authentication, a PIN code, or key cards to prevent unauthorised access.
  • Installing CCTV cameras in entrances and key locations and staff monitoring them.
  • Installing alarms, the alarms could be activated when windows are opened or a room is entered.
  • Provide training for spotting social engineer attacks.
  • Having security monitoring entrances.

In summary, we shouldn't take physical security for granted and it should be strongly implemented. These are just some common security threats that some organisations might face, there is many more risks companies should consider when securing their systems or valuable assets.
